Women's March San Francisco and The Commonwealth Club have partnered to put together an evening for us to come together as a community as we wait for the United States Supreme Court decision on abortion rights (in Dobbs v. Mississippi) which is expected to be announced this month. If the leaked early draft of the decision holds up in the final opinion, some some 22 states are expected to quickly make abortion all but illegal, while California will likely remain one of the few where full abortion rights are guaranteed.
Join us for conversation on the role that California could play in a post-Roe environment for a special gathering including conversation, networking and learning. We have options for participating in person as well as virtually for this event:
June 28th In-Person at The Commonwealth Club, or virtually online
Discussion (4–5 PM PST)
Sylvia Ghazarian, Executive Director, Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project (participating via Zoom)
Gilda Gonzales CEO, Planned Parenthood Northern California
Buffy Wicks California State Assembly member (District 15)
Abortion rights leaders and legislators from across California will discuss what this moment means for the Golden State, how abortion rights might be further enshrined within the state, and what can be done to ensure that financial barriers are eliminated so that all women in California can have access to reproductive rights.
Gathering (5–6 PM PST)
After the program, in-person attendees are invited to meet for a special outdoor reception on the rooftop deck of The Commonwealth Club to be in community and create and reinforce the connections required for this continued work. Light bites and wines from the Bay Area provided.
Screening of The Janes (6–8 PM) with a virtual introduction from the film's directors preceding
With thanks to HBO/Warner Media, the gathering will also include a free community screening of the recently released HBO documentary The Janes, an in depth exploration of the Jane Collective, a clandestine abortion group that operated in Chicago before abortion rights were guaranteed by the Roe v. Wade decision.
