Official Women’s March SF group will NOT be organizing a Rally on Jan 18, 2025

The official Women’s March San Francisco group will NOT be organizing a march or rally on January 18, 2025.

In November 2016, a group of passionate Bay Area community members came together through grassroots efforts to organize the first Women’s March in San Francisco on January 21, 2017. Most of us had no prior experience organizing large-scale protests, but we knew the urgency of standing united to fight against fascism, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and all forms of oppression. Since then, we have hosted multiple events to raise awareness, inspire action, and educate our community through powerful speakers and resources.

However, Women’s March San Francisco has been inactive since 2023 due to burnout and a lack of volunteers to take on leadership roles. While we’ve continued to amplify our partners’ events and share resources through our website https://womensmarchsf.org/ we are no longer in a position to organize large-scale marches or rallies.

Organizing a march or rally requires immense effort, time, energy, and resources. For example, our 2017 march and rally cost $70,000 to organize, and with rising costs, including required insurance, we would now face expenses exceeding $100,000. As an all-volunteer group, we believe it is unethical to raise such a significant amount for a one-day event. That money is far better spent supporting organizations that engage in direct actions and provide essential services on the ground year-round.

No matter who occupies the White House or Congress, the fight for human rights, justice, and equity must continue. We must remain steadfast in opposing white supremacy, fascism, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, imperialism, colonialism, oppression and genocide. For far too long, this country’s leaders have prioritized corporations, billionaires, lobbyists, special interest groups, and the military-industrial complex over the needs of the people.

We urge you to stay active and engaged. Get involved directly with organizations making a difference. Fight for what is just and right—not only when issues affect you personally, but for all marginalized and vulnerable communities.

To help you stay connected, we’ve created a resource page featuring local organizations you can support through donations, volunteering, or pro-bono services. Visit our Beyond the March page at https://womensmarchsf.org/beyond-the-march.

Let’s continue to unite, organize, and build a better world together.

With gratitude and solidarity,
Women’s March San Francisco
