There will be two questions on your September 14 ballot:
Do you want to recall Governor Newsom (remove him from office)?
Yes = a vote to RECALL Newsom
No = a vote to KEEP NewsomIf 50%+ voters vote NO on the recall, Gavin Newsom, the current Democratic governor will remain in office, and he can keep COVID safety regulations in place and protect Reproductive Rights.
If the governor is recalled (50%+ vote Yes above), who do you want to replace him?
Choose one from the list of candidates. If Newsom is recalled, the replacement candidate does not need a majority of votes.
It also won't matter how few votes they get. That winning candidate will become governor of California for the rest of Newsom’s term, through Jan. 2, 2023.Even if you don't want to recall Newsom, you should still vote for a hypothetical replacement.
You can pick a candidate in Question 2 on your ballot even if you voted “NO” on Question 1. This means you get a say in who would be California’s next governor. You cannot write-in Newsom, as he is ineligible to win the recall election.
